I was able to transfer the same folder back to my Mac in a hair under 40 seconds.Īs you can probably imagine, such a setup works great with large video files. For example, I was able to transfer a 51.6 GB folder containing three videos from my Mac’s built in SSD to the Sonnet M.2 4×4 PCIe SSD in just 16 seconds. How does this drive perform when testing out file transfers via Finder? As you might expect, the performance is quick. That, coupled with GPU upgrades, CPU upgrades, and RAM upgrades, make the Mac Pro one of the most growth-ready Macs in ages.īut benchmarks are one thing. ![]() Having this much fast storage on tap is downright amazing, especially since it’s way faster than Apple’s own SSD for less money.Īs I highlighted in my hands-on look at the Top Mac Pro Features, PCIe expansion is one of the most exciting things about the new Mac Pro. This is the reason why I’ve been so excited about the Mac Pro. This is not a joke, and I’ve seen this setup benchmark even better. Running tests with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test tool, I was impressed by the results: Thermal material is featured on both sides to manage heatĪfter installing the Sonnet card in an x16 PCIe port in my Mac Pro, I used macOS’s built-in software RAID Assistant to set up the four drives in a RAID 0 configuration for peak performance. One day I look forward to having four 2 TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSDs for more storage, but the results of a 4 TB RAID 0 setup are still extremely impressive.Ī full on 8 TB setup with the Sonnet M.2 4×4 PCIe Card would set you back somewhere around $2,000, which is $600 less than Apple’s 8 TB Mac Pro build-to-order config. Sonnet provided three 1 TB SSDs along with one 2 TB SSD. Having one of these drives produces results that are impressive enough, but I was excited at the prospect of having four of them in a RAID 0 configuration with firehose x16 PCIe access. ![]() Subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more videos See Sonnet’s tech specs for additional details. For that reason, double-sided memory component M.2 SSD media is not recommended. Keep in mind that Sonnet says that only SSDs with memory components on the top side of the module are compatible with this card. Sonnet pre-filled four Samsung EVO 970 M.2 SSDs for me to test, which offer sequential read and write performance levels of up to 3,500 MB/s and 2,500 MB/s, respectively. Setting up the unit is just a matter of unscrewing the outer cover, removing the heat sink, and depositing four drives. The x16 card, which features four slots for four single-sided M.2 blades, allocates four PCIe lanes per card. ![]() Sonnet reached out to me last week to see if I’d be interested in taking its M.2 4×4 PCIe Card for a test drive in my Mac Pro, and I happily obliged. Watch our hands-on video review for the details. When paired with the right SSDs, the Sonnet M.2 4×4 PCIe Card produces speeds of the bonkers variety.ĭuring benchmark tests with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test utility, I was getting write speeds in that easily surpassed 6,000 MB/s, and read speeds that eclipsed 7000 MB/s.įor comparison’s sake, Apple’s fastest 8 TB SSD produces speeds “only” up to 3400 MB/s, so this setup is capable of running circles around the Mac Pro’s fastest built-in SSD for less money. If you’re looking for the fastest SSD available for the Mac Pro, then this may be the solution for you. One of the best chroniclers of sisterhood returns with a funny, moving novel of loss and love.Hello there, reader! If you’re like me, working from home has definitely not slowed down your high-stress weekly workload. This is the first novel in 15 years from Alvarez ( How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, 1991, etc.), and she builds on one of her strengths, depicting the complex relationships among sisters. Her main character is Antonia Vega, who, as the story begins, is stunned with grief. A year before, she and her husband, Sam, were driving separately to a restaurant dinner near their Vermont home to celebrate her retirement when he suffered a fatal aneurysm. Bereft of a beloved spouse and done with a rewarding career as a college professor and novelist, she’s adrift and “has withdrawn from every narrative, including the ones she makes up for sale.” Then need comes knocking in the form of an undocumented Mexican worker at her neighbor’s dairy farm. Sam, a doctor who was widely beloved for his volunteer work and empathy, would have done all he could, she knows: “He was the bold one.Īntonia emigrated long ago from the Dominican Republic, and young Mario seeks her help (and translation skills) in reuniting with his fiancee, Estela, who is also undocumented and stranded in Colorado. She, the reluctant activist….” In the meantime, Antonia sets off to celebrate her 66th birthday with her three sisters. The two younger ones, Tilly and Mona, are as contentious and loving as ever, Tilly a font of oddly apropos malapropisms such as “That bitch was like a wolf in cheap clothing!” But all of them are worried about their oldest sister, Izzy, a retired therapist who recently has been behaving erratically. When her phone goes dead and she fails to arrive for the party, the other sisters swing into action. Izzy’s fate will take surprising turns, as will the relationship between Mario and Estela, as Antonia tries to figure out what she can do for all of them and for herself. #JULIA ALVAREZ AHA MOMENT HOW TO#Īlvarez writes with knowing warmth about how well sisters know how to push on each other’s bruises and how powerfully they can lift each other up. ![]() In this bighearted novel, family bonds heal a woman's grief. When tragedy strikes, a mother and daughter forge a new life. Morgan felt obligated to marry her high school sweetheart, Chris, when she got pregnant with their daughter, Clara. But she secretly got along much better with Chris’ thoughtful best friend, Jonah, who was dating her sister, Jenny. Now her life as a stay-at-home parent has left her feeling empty but not ungrateful for what she has. Jonah and Jenny eventually broke up, but years later they had a one-night stand and Jenny got pregnant with their son, Elijah. Now Jonah is back in town, engaged to Jenny, and working at the local high school as Clara’s teacher. Clara dreams of being an actress and has a crush on Miller, who plans to go to film school, but her father doesn't approve. It doesn’t help that Miller already has a jealous girlfriend who stalks him via text from college. But Clara and Morgan’s home life changes radically when Chris and Jenny are killed in an accident, revealing long-buried secrets and forcing Morgan to reevaluate the life she chose when early motherhood forced her hand. ![]() Also, investing in “project management software” wasn’t really exciting for any investor we knew. So we decided to build and launch something first, before we approach investors. The team was really young, so it was incredibly tough to attract experienced investors at this time. Marc and I quickly decided to invest € 100.000, but also knew that the team needed a lot more money to build the product we were dreaming of. We really clicked, it was fascinating and fun. I remember him talking about Assembler, Basic, Delphi and a lot of PHP Frameworks (which were pretty popular back then). He has basically been a developer since he was in school. He loves design, understands technology, and builds companies the same way I do – progressive and product-driven. But more importantly, Christian and I very were similar characters, except that he’s a lot younger than me :) ![]() I really liked the design, the love for details and the new approach. Christian wanted to make a basic version available for free, but customers had to pay for advanced features (an App Store for Project Management in a way). The product was web-based, beautifully designed and solved many of the existing problems with other products. So I decided to call Christian and see what he was working on.Ĭhristian showed me early designs of a project management software with the working title: Lunchbox. Hence, I was very familiar with the industry and potential competitors. I disliked all existing products in the market and I had built a project management tool for our company. We connected on Xing (the german LinkedIn founded by Lars Hinrichs) and a couple of weeks later I saw his post: “Who wants to join me to build the next generation project management software?” How I met ChristianĪ few months after we sold ip.labs, Marc and I met Christian at a local meetup in Berlin, he was running his own agency at that time. We wanted to support design & technology-driven founders with our experience and seed financing. After selling the company in 2008 to Fujifilm, Marc and I decided to invest a portion of the money we’ve made into a small investment fund called e42 (our investment firm). Marc Sieberger, Alex Koch, Georg Sommershof and I managed to build a successful business which reached over 100 million consumers in over 50 countries. But I never gave up and finally did build a photo-service platform (ip.labs) that actually worked. For many years none of my products or ideas have been successful enough to finance a bigger team or being interesting enough to be acquired by a big corporation. I’m founding startups since 1992 and have made many mistakes along the way. To all founders who read this: I hope this story encourages you to stay confident and energized to keep building, shipping and find your way to success! Why I could invest in Wunderlist I’ve always been a supporter and enjoyed working on the product with him, but like in every company, there were periods which were incredibly tough to deal with. It was also remarkable to experience his personal journey - he has grown from a design- and technology-driven founder to a strong leader and strategic thinker. Startups are incredibly hard, and it’s an inspiring story how Christian turned a simple idea into a phenomenally successful global company. I hope my post will inspire other founders and investors to take risks, and support teams during challenging times. As a founding investor and co-creator of the first product version, I wanted to share my personal Wunderlist story and how I met the founder Christian Reber and his team. Yesterday, Wunderlist announced its acquisition by Microsoft. ![]() This feature helps you sort out unwanted emails and quickly eliminate unnecessary mailers. The Jihad įollowing the firebombing of the city of Crimson on Canopus IV the Blakist Forty-first Shadow Division launched a series of attacks on other worlds within the Magistracy of Canopus between 30. By mid-July the fighting had reached Old Port Town, the site of a largely disused DropPort that had been a major DropPort until the construction of a major new DropPort in Crescent City had reduced Old Port Town to a backup facility and the local community to a relative ghost town. Capellan Confederation Armed Forces were patrolling the system, with at least one JumpShip and DropShip deployed in the system Borgan's Rift was one of a number of border systems that the Magestrix had given the Capellans permission to conduct random patrols in. In mid-3067 Borgan's Rift was one of a number of planets in the region to be an active battlefield. Eventually Borgan's Rift was sold to Shanti Magliss of Magliss Spirits who built warehouses and distribution centers all over the planet, yet the pirate attacks continued. Up until 3040 Borgan's Rift was regularly pillaged by pirates and economically stagnant. In the thirty-first century Borgan's Rift was suffering from the crippling of interstellar economies and dramatic technological decline that characterized the Succession Wars. Star League ĭuring the final years of the Star League, Borgan's Rift was the host to a Star League Defense Force garrison. Two mercenary regiments were defending Borgan's Rift at the time, Kincani's Dragoons and The Red Hand, and following the pattern used by the defending Magistracy Armed Forces units on Aspropirgos and Gallis the year before, the mercenaries stung the invading forces enough to contest the invasion and then retreated before the SLDF could mount an effective pursuit, preserving their strength as part of a general refit and rearmament campaign both sides were conducting. The Star League Defense Force task force commanded by Captain-General Marion Marik launched their attack on Borgan's Rift in September 2581 and while the planetary invasion force was smaller than those used during 25, it still consisted of a complete SLDF brigade - the Fifty-eighth - supported by the 402nd Independent Regiment and the Third Marik Militia. ![]() Planetary History Reunification War ĭuring the Reunification War Borgan's Rift became a target for the SLDF invasion of the Magistracy of Canopus during the fourth year of the military campaign. Read my new sci-fi thriller novel Herokiller, available now in print and online. But for pure soloing? These are my suggestions.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. And remember, you will see drops for all classes during your playthrough, so I would definitely make more than one character. Some may prove to be less useful in the endgame when everything is Very Serious Business, but you can have fun with all of them for a long, long time before you start have to worrying about that. I have simply have fun with all of them, and I cannot really say the same for past games (I was never a big turret soldier bro guy). I really do not think there are any weak links in the class chain here in Borderlands 3. But at least for a Normal difficulty playthrough, even if you pick her, I think you’ll be fine. She is a lot of fun, don’t get me wrong, but she definitely seems like she’s supposed to be part of a team unit rather than going it alone. ![]() I would say she could be the best offensive class in the game with her crazy mech damage and some of my favorite gun-based skills like the ability to shoot while sprinting. Her only defensive tree revolves around buffs to her shield, which are nice, but I do think it makes her the least defensive-based class in the game, which for solo play, is not ideal. The only pet-like ability she has is that one perk lets her mech stay in auto mode for a little while after she uses it, but that ain’t much. ![]() I don’t think she’s the “worst” character at all, I like her a lot actually, but I do think she is the least primed for solo play. Some may disagree with me putting Moze last here, but I think it’s where she needs to be. It’s a great skill, but it also shows that Gearbox understood that her playstyle means you may end up dying more than most. As in, you will automatically burst out of Second Wind with full health and shields and a damage nova. And past that, she even has one ability that just…straight up gives her a second life every two minutes. She can spec into an absolutely wild amount of health regen and damage reduction, making her beyond tanky for all the melee-ing she needs to do. She does, however, have a lot of skills that make solo-ing with her a lot of fun, and I’ve enjoyed using her as my second most played character, even though I’m by myself. Getting up close and personal with enemies is pretty damn dangerous in a game when you can be blown up with a couple shotgun blasts or Badass melees, so she’s pretty high risk, high reward, and I would argue, has a higher skill cap than most as a result. He’s a very, very solid pick for solo players, and I loved my time with him.Īmara is a bruiser with a solid focus on melee in many trees, so you can see why she may be a bit…problematic when it comes to solo play. I actually like the shield quite a bit, not necessarily due to its protective abilities (though those help), but because it gives massive bonuses when near it to reload speed, damage, regen, everything, and in this tree there’s one of my favorite skills in the game which lets Zane (and his support buddies) freeze enemies with repeated crit shots which so far is proving to be one of the best abilities I’ve encountered in the game. ![]() I also just found a skill mod that has the chance to totally reset its duration or cooldown on kill, meaning I can have it up incredibly often if I’m lucky. The follow drone lasts longer but has a longer cooldown, though it can do things like regenerate your shield by zapping enemies in addition to doing damage. There’s a final stage tree upgrade that lets the clone have a copy of your gun, meaning eventually it can do some serious damage as well. Like FL4K’s pets, you can share damage with the clone and it will serve as a focal point of fire for enemies when it’s up. At least two of the three essentially operate as pets, albeit since they are action skills, they go on cooldown. There’s a holographic clone of him, a follow drone and a shield. Zane is the only character who can use two different action skills at once, out of his three total. Rather, I mained Zane, who I think is a very close second here. I, however, did not main FL4K in my first playthrough. ![]() ![]()
